We Are a Farming Class: Dubbo’s Hinterland, 1870–1950

by Peter Woodley

About this book

Peter Woodley follows the formation of farming communities in the hinterland of Dubbo, New South Wales, between 1870 and 1950. His local history examines how households, schools, work and voluntary associations helped people establish a sense of place and a shared rural identity.

Other chapters consider credit and debt, relations with labour, political allegiances, transport and communications, and the stories communities told about their past. Family records, newspapers and institutional archives connect everyday exchanges with wider changes in settler society. This complete illustrated 2025 book develops research presented in the author's 2021 doctoral thesis and includes its bibliography and index.
