Lewis Spence develops an account of Atlantis through classical writings, comparative mythology, folklore and the archaeological interpretations available to him. Beginning with the sources attributed to Plato and later writers, he sets out his reconstruction of the island's geography and civilisation.
Chapters examine proposed rulers, religious practices, cultural connections and accounts of a lost Atlantic land. Spence gives particular attention to links he draws between the Mediterranean, the Americas and British and Irish traditions. His preface distinguishes this fuller narrative from his earlier books on Atlantis.
The complete historical Rider edition preserves all sixteen full-page plates and the original text through its final chapter. The book itself is undated; contemporary Rider advertisements establish publication by 1927.
