The Great Psychological Crime develops an esoteric argument about personal freedom, mental influence and the consequences of surrendering individual control. Associated with the Harmonic Series and edited by Florence Huntley, it presents its subject through a moral and spiritual framework centred on the nature and responsibilities of the individual.
The work is divided into three main parts: modern hypnotism, spiritual mediumship and retributive justice. Its discussions consider suggestion, claims of therapeutic influence, mediumistic practices, personal motives and the relationship between mental activity and spiritual life. Definitions and extended arguments are used to build the book’s account of what it calls a destructive principle in nature.
Later sections turn to immortality, self-control and spiritual consequences, followed by a supplementary discussion of competing doctrines. The work was first copyrighted in 1902; this scan preserves a 1915 edition. It offers readers a substantial example of early twentieth-century occult debate about hypnosis, mediumship and individual responsibility.
