C. Howard Hinton uses geometrical analogies and physical models to explore the possibility of a fourth spatial dimension. Beginning with the imagined experience of inhabitants of a plane, he develops ways of thinking about shapes and relationships that extend beyond ordinary three-dimensional perception.
The book combines diagrams, historical discussion and exercises with speculation about consciousness, experience and a higher world. Later chapters describe four-dimensional figures and coloured cube models; appendices explain their construction and introduce a language of spatial relations. This is the expanded 1906 second edition of a work first published in 1904, preserving its original illustrations and coloured frontispiece.
