Catherine Fisher explores the work of Australian women broadcasters between the introduction of radio in 1923 and the arrival of television in 1956. Using magazines, station records, scripts, personal papers and surviving recordings, she examines how radio brought public affairs into domestic spaces and gave women new opportunities to speak to large audiences.
Chapters follow the interwar establishment of women’s broadcasting, international connections, wartime programs, parliamentary voices, postwar programming and regional communities. Fisher considers professional broadcasters alongside women who used radio to participate in public debate. The book provides a historical account of the medium’s changing audiences, working practices and significance for women’s public lives, with notes and a bibliography.
