Skin, Kin and Clan: The Dynamics of Social Categories in Indigenous Australia

by Patrick McConvell, Piers Kelly and Sébastien Lacrampe (editors)

About this book

This volume examines the social categories and kinship systems of Indigenous Australia, bringing together linguistic, historical and anthropological research. Contributors investigate how names and relationships connect people with one another and with particular places, and how those systems have changed over time.

Chapters address the geographical distribution of social organisation, land tenure in Arnhem Land, moiety names in south-eastern Australia, clan groupings and the history of section and subsection systems. Later studies examine close and distant relationships, Waanyi terminology and terms that express relationships among three people. Maps, diagrams and tables make the comparisons visible, while an index helps readers locate languages, places and concepts.
