Craig J. Reynolds explores the life and reputation of Khun Phan, a southern Thai policeman associated with both law enforcement and protective powers. His study connects accounts of policing with the rituals, sacred objects and ideas about authority that surrounded this figure.
The narrative follows encounters with bandits, religious specialists and local communities, examining how knowledge of people and places became part of a policeman’s effectiveness. Amulets, divination and stories about invulnerability help reveal relationships between personal charisma, official power and everyday belief. Photographs, notes and references support this historical and cultural portrait.
