The narrators known as Darby and Joan describe a sequence of communications that begins with an unexpected experiment using a ouija board. A communicator they call Stephen becomes the central figure in a narrative combining personal encounters, questions of identity and a developing philosophy of consciousness.
Early chapters follow efforts to understand particular messages and evaluate their significance. Later discussions turn to individuality, the afterlife, free will, good and evil and service. The narrators record their changing interpretations and close with their conclusions about the experience. This is the complete Harper & Brothers edition published in February 1920, including the publisher’s note explaining the anonymous presentation.
