Alice A. Bailey presents an esoteric account of initiation as a sequence of changes in spiritual understanding and responsibility. The book places individual development within a larger theosophical picture of humanity, spiritual hierarchies and the solar system, describing the relationships Bailey sees between these different levels of existence.
The chapters discuss the preparation of a candidate, the path of discipleship and the stages of initiation. Bailey connects these subjects with discipline, service, the development of consciousness and the responsibilities associated with spiritual knowledge. Her account also considers the figures and offices that she places within an occult hierarchy.
First published in 1922, the work belongs to Bailey’s early writings on spiritual development. Readers interested in the history of esotericism and theosophical ideas will find a systematic presentation of her terminology and cosmology. This edition retains the original scanned pages and the book’s supporting material.
