Ebenezer Mission Station, 1863–1873: The Diary of Missionaries Adolf and Polly Hartmann

by Adolf and Polly Hartmann

About this book

Felicity Jensz introduces and edits the Hartmanns’ diary of life at Ebenezer, a Moravian mission in western Victoria. Its entries follow the everyday work of the station between 1863 and 1873: teaching, worship, farming, illness, travel, family relationships and encounters with Aboriginal residents. The diary records the missionaries’ own outlook and the practical difficulties that shaped their work.

A substantial historical introduction places the manuscript within Moravian missionary networks and the changing administration of Aboriginal missions. A foreword, explanatory notes, a chronological guide, photographs, a bibliography and an index help readers follow the people and events mentioned in the entries. This 2023 edition makes the diary available to a broader audience for the first time.
