Thomson Jay Hudson develops an argument for personal survival after death through his distinction between objective and subjective mental faculties. Starting with questions of evidence and reasoning, he considers hypnotism, telepathy, mediumship and religious experience, offering his own explanations for phenomena commonly attributed to spirits. The book extends the psychological hypothesis introduced in his earlier work on psychic phenomena.
Later chapters turn to memory, the emotions, the faculties Hudson assigns to the soul and the possible conditions of a future life. His discussion combines nineteenth-century psychical research with interpretations of biblical narratives and the teachings of Jesus. The complete 1895 volume includes the detailed contents, preface and concluding argument.
