The Great Gatsby

by F. Scott Fitzgerald

A glittering portrait of longing, wealth, and illusion in the Jazz Age.

About this book

Nick Carraway becomes the neighbor of Jay Gatsby, a wealthy man whose lavish parties conceal a private longing. Across the bay lives Daisy Buchanan, the woman Gatsby hopes to win back. Their reunion exposes tensions that wealth and charm cannot resolve.

Fitzgerald places the glitter of the 1920s alongside social division and the longing to recover a lost past. Vivid imagery and a narrator both drawn to and troubled by this world carry the compact story.

The novel’s parties and expensive possessions are deliberately set against quieter images: a distant light, a road through industrial waste, an empty room. These recurring details give its small cast and brief span of action an unusually lasting emotional presence.
