Frankenstein

by Mary Shelley

An ambitious scientist creates life and discovers the terrible cost of abandoning his creation.

About this book

Victor Frankenstein’s fascination with the secrets of life leads him to assemble and animate a human creature. Horrified by the result, he abandons the being he has made. The creature’s search for companionship becomes a demand its creator can no longer ignore.

Told through interwoven accounts, Mary Shelley’s novel asks what we owe to those we bring into the world. Beneath its Gothic atmosphere lie questions about ambition, loneliness, responsibility, and the consequences of judging someone by appearance.

The movement between a voyager’s letters, Victor’s memories, and the creature’s own account changes the reader’s sympathies. Giving the creature a voice is central to the novel: his intelligence and emotional life complicate every easy distinction between monster and human.
