About this book

Circular Water Stories brings together the work of alumni and tutors of the Circular Water Stories lab, a graduation studio in the MSc Landscape Architecture programme at the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment, TU Delft, the Netherlands. Drawing on several years of academic and design research, the book explores how knowledge embedded in traditional water systems and their landscapes can be uncovered, understood, and brought into dialogue with contemporary design.

At the heart of the book is the Illustrative Method developed by Bobbink and colleagues over years of teaching and lab research. Through drawings, maps, photographs, and other forms of visual storytelling, the method makes visible the spatial, social, and cultural relationships that shape water systems. It enables these systems to be read and compared across diverse geographical and cultural contexts, bringing to light relationships and forms of knowledge that have often remained spatially undocumented.

The book presents a rich collection of field-based case studies, original drawings, maps, and photographic interpretations. Its thematic chapters trace water across time and terrain, revealing the intricate connections between landscape, water heritage, community, and design.
