Hanne Appelqvist traces the place of aesthetics throughout Ludwig Wittgenstein’s philosophical development. Wittgenstein and Aesthetics reads his reflections on art, judgment and understanding alongside his changing accounts of language and philosophical method, with particular attention to affinities between his work and that of Immanuel Kant.
The discussion moves chronologically from the early connection between ethics and aesthetics to the middle-period treatment of aesthetic judgments and their justification. It then follows the comparison between language and music in the later writings. These stages are presented as connected parts of a continuing philosophical investigation, rather than isolated remarks on the arts.
Appelqvist’s central concern is how a non-conceptual encounter with reality bears on the work of philosophy. Readers will find close interpretation of Wittgenstein’s writings, explanations of the normative questions involved in aesthetic judgment, and an argument about the continuity of his interests across different periods. The book is intended for readers of philosophy who want to understand why aesthetics matters to more than a separate theory of artistic taste.
