Darwin J. Ockerman and Namjeong Choi model the movement and storage of water across selected watersheds in Cameron County, Texas. Prepared with the City of Brownsville, this USGS study considers a landscape of canals and resacas, the former river channels that provide habitat and help manage floodwater in the lower Rio Grande Valley.
The study divides a 217-square-mile area into eleven watersheds and develops separate hydrologic models for nine of them. Using the Hydrological Simulation Program—FORTRAN, the authors calibrate simulations against streamflow observations from 2022–23. Water budgets account for runoff, evapotranspiration, stored water, diversions and withdrawals, allowing differences between canal and resaca watersheds to be examined.
The report explains the modeling framework, input data and calibration before presenting the resulting water-budget estimates and their limitations. Maps, flow diagrams and tables accompany the analysis. Although the series number contains 2025 and the measurements concern 2022–23, the work itself was published in 2026. It offers a focused example of applied hydrology for readers interested in watershed science and the evidence used to understand managed surface-water systems.
