Lotte Jensen explores how flooding has shaped Dutch cultural memory. The book follows the stories, songs, images and public rituals through which communities have understood disasters and remembered their consequences.
Its subjects include flood legends, literary responses, heroic figures, charitable appeals and international solidarity. Jensen also considers monuments and other material forms of remembrance, connecting national narratives with family histories and local experiences. First published in Dutch in 2022, this English edition is translated by Nancy Forest-Flier.
