Maurice Barrès recalls his friendship with Stanislas de Guaita and the literary and intellectual experiences that led Guaita toward occult studies. Written in French after his friend’s death, this memoir moves between their shared youth, their reading and the later world of esoteric inquiry around Guaita.
Barrès describes the personal qualities, habits of study and ideas through which Guaita approached symbolism, magic and spiritual questions. The booklet preserves two portraits and the original 1898 text. It offers a contemporary personal account of an occult writer rather than a later compilation of his teachings.
