U.S. Geological Survey Tunison Laboratory of Aquatic Science Research to Rehabilitate Native Prey Fish of the Lake Ontario Fish Community—Coregonine Fishes

by James E. McKenna, Jr., James H. Johnson

About this book

This report describes research to restore native coregonine prey fishes to Lake Ontario and its connected waters. It follows the work of the Tunison Laboratory of Aquatic Science, connecting the rearing of fish with experimental releases, monitoring and the ecological questions that arise after fish enter the lake.

The discussion covers egg production, diet, growth, marking, release methods and postrelease survival, together with evidence of wild reproduction and habitat use. Maps and tables show where studies were conducted and how observations contribute to rehabilitation planning.

The complete report first appeared in 2024; this is the original publisher’s revised version 1.1 of February 2025. It preserves the photographs, maps, study results and references.
