U.S. Geological Survey Climate Science Plan—Future Research Directions

by Tamara Wilson, Ryan P. Boyles, Nicole M. DeCrappeo

About this book

This U.S. Geological Survey plan identifies directions for climate science across the agency’s research on water, ecosystems, landscapes and natural hazards. It describes the scientific role of the USGS and the need to connect observations, explanations of change and information that can support resource-management decisions.

After an executive summary and introduction, the main plan sets out research priorities and the relationships among them. Supporting sections provide references, recommended reading and a glossary. Two substantial appendices survey current climate-science activities and connect proposed goals and strategies with expected impacts and outcomes. Photographs illustrate the range of environments and processes under study, including coasts, reefs, fish and changing landscapes. This complete 2024 report retains those images, its original diagrams and all supporting pages.
