Transnational Crusoe, Illustration and Reading History, 1719–1722

by Sandro Jung

About this book

Sandro Jung studies how illustrations helped shape the earliest reception of Robinson Crusoe across national and publishing boundaries. Focusing on editions issued between 1719 and 1722, he treats images as active elements in the experience of reading rather than as decoration added to an already complete literary work. English, Amsterdam, and German editions provide different settings in which the story’s characters and events were visualized.

The study moves from William Taylor’s editions through continental publications to Edward Midwinter’s version, examining the adaptation, reuse, and placement of images. These comparisons connect illustration studies with the history of the book and the practical circumstances of publishing. Readers encounter a close analysis of how visual interpretation travelled with the novel and contributed to the ways its early audiences understood it.
