Gary LaFree examines terrorism through the questions and methods of criminology. He asks what can be learned by comparing terrorist activity with other forms of crime, and how evidence about offenders, events and patterns can improve the study of political violence.
The book traces the increasing involvement of criminologists in terrorism research and reviews empirical comparisons between terrorism and ordinary criminal behavior. It considers similarities as well as differences, rather than assuming in advance that the two must require entirely separate explanations. The discussion connects the available data with established criminological theories.
LaFree also explores what these comparisons imply for research and public policy. The emphasis remains on analyzing behavior and evaluating explanations: how researchers define their subject, what observations support their arguments, and where further investigation is needed. It is a concise scholarly account of the developing relationship between terrorism studies and criminal justice research.
