Thy Son Liveth: Messages from a Soldier to His Mother

by Grace Duffie Boylan (attributed; published anonymously)

About this book

A mother mourning her son’s death in the First World War recounts messages she understands as coming from him beyond death. The soldier, Bob, describes continued life and addresses the grief of those left behind, giving this short work the form of an intimate exchange between wartime loss and spiritual consolation.

The narrative connects the mother’s memories of Bob’s childhood and interest in wireless telegraphy with the communications she later receives. The messages turn repeatedly to the persistence of personality, the conditions of another world, and the emotional bond between the living and the dead. The publishers’ foreword explains the anonymous presentation and the circumstances under which the manuscript was offered.

First copyrighted in 1918, the work is presented here in Little, Brown, and Company’s 1919 edition. Library of Congress metadata attributes it to Grace Duffie Boylan. The complete original scan preserves both the foreword and the final messages.
