The Vengeance of Sa’ik

by Otis Adelbert Kline

About this book

Otis Adelbert Kline follows American war correspondent Frank Bidwell as he works undercover in Jidda during the First World War. An offer from a man who appears to be a Bedouin draws him away from the coffee shop where he has been gathering information.

The adventure brings Bidwell into military movements, disguises and uncertain loyalties during the Arab revolt against Ottoman rule. Sa’ik’s personal demand for vengeance runs through the larger conflict, giving encounters on the desert route an intensity that Bidwell does not fully understand at first. Conversations and sudden acts of violence repeatedly change his assessment of the people around him.

The narrative combines the viewpoint of a reporter with the action of a wartime adventure. Its closing scene completes the personal story signaled by the title. First published in Oriental Stories in its December–January 1930–31 issue, the complete work retains Donald Von Gelb’s source illustration and the edition’s production and licensing material.
