This study develops an ethical framework for research involving nonhuman primates around three principles: harmonization, replacement, and justice. L. Syd M Johnson, Andrew Fenton, and Mary Lee Jensvold consider how the treatment of vulnerable research subjects can inform the responsibilities owed to other primates.
The authors argue for closer alignment between human and nonhuman research protections, replacement with methods relevant to humans, and fairer decisions about who bears the burdens of scientific investigation. Discussion of animal capacities, research practices, and proposed alternatives explains the reasoning behind their position. Developed in collaboration with the National Anti-Vivisection Society, the monograph presents a sustained philosophical argument about research ethics and the moral status of its subjects.
