The Ship of Ishtar

by A. Merritt

About this book

A carved block sent from the ruins of Babylon draws John Kenton into a world where an ancient ship is divided between rival divine powers. Aboard it, the priestess Sharane and the servants of Nergal are caught in a conflict that gives physical form to the struggle between desire, loyalty and domination.

Kenton's encounters carry him from bewilderment to captivity, alliance and command. The voyage moves through islands, temples and dangerous waters, while the shifting relationships among the ship's occupants give the adventure its emotional center. Merritt combines elaborate settings with sudden violence and the sense that the gods themselves are participants in the drama.

First published in 1924, the novel is presented here through the illustrated memorial edition reproduced by Project Gutenberg. Virgil Finlay's illustrations and the edition's additional material remain in the original EPUB. The story joins romantic adventure with mythological fantasy, following a modern outsider drawn into an unfamiliar and fiercely contested world.
