Moses Hull compares biblical accounts of spiritual activity with the claims and practices of modern Spiritualism. The Question Settled is organised as an argument about continuity: Hull places familiar scriptural narratives beside more recent reports and asks how the two should be interpreted in relation to one another.
The discussion addresses manifestations, inspiration and communication with spirits, drawing its examples from both religious texts and the nineteenth-century movement. Hull’s defence of Spiritualism is directed toward readers engaged in the religious controversy surrounding it. The book’s interest lies in the comparisons he constructs and the interpretative assumptions on which they depend.
This is the complete 1891 ninth edition, retaining the author’s new preface, the earlier preface and the original portrait. The 1869 copyright and Hull’s retrospective comments identify the earlier history of the work, while also making clear that the supplied printing is a later edition. Readers can follow the complete historical argument without treating its later printing date as the origin of the book.
