The search began amid family doubts and accounts associated with the medium Leonora Piper, leading the Boston journalist through hospitals, cemeteries, official inquiries and conversations with witnesses.
The narrative follows successive leads and the difficulty of reconciling statements, documents and personal impressions. Philpott describes the role that dreams, mediumistic communications and psychical research played in the investigation, as well as the conclusions he drew from his own inquiries. This 1915 account combines a reporter’s travel narrative with a case from the history of psychical investigation.
