A three-man expedition to Mars encounters an unexpected division between the planet’s inhabitants in Charles E. Fritch’s The Orneks and the Gogos. Captain Hawkins and his companions, Stallman and Bryant, arrive with ordinary expectations about exploration, only to find that the local distinctions do not fit the categories they brought from Earth.
The story develops as a darkly comic first-contact adventure, using reversals in the explorers’ understanding of the Martians and of their own situation. Its humour depends on the gap between apparent hospitality and the purposes behind it.
