Jane Revere Burke presents a sequence of discourses received through automatic writing and attributed by her to the deceased philosopher William James. Their central concerns are spiritual development, the practice of Christianity, human responsibility, and the relationship between earthly life and a continuing existence beyond death.
The book places these messages within an account of how they were received. A preliminary note and Burke’s foreword introduce the circumstances of the writing, while the author’s afterword returns to the process and its meaning for her. The discourses address belief through conduct, the cultivation of the whole person, and the difficulties of communicating ideas across the boundary between the living and the dead.
This is E. P. Dutton’s 1922 public edition, following an earlier private circulation described in the opening note. The complete scan includes the prefatory material, all chapters, the afterword, the note to this edition, and the index.
