Rodney A. Bryant and Artur A. Chernovsky investigate how exhaust flow is measured in large-scale fire experiments. Accurate flow measurements are essential to calculating heat release rates, so the report tests the instruments used to monitor exhaust at NIST’s National Fire Research Laboratory.
The study uses S-probe traverses to map velocity, flow angle and temperature across exhaust ducts. It compares the resulting reference measurements with readings from averaging pitot probes and with earlier tracer-gas calibrations. The methods, apparatus, uncertainty analysis and results are presented with original photographs, diagrams and graphs. Appendices preserve the symbols, traverse positions, flow distributions and calibration data in this complete January 2025 report.
