The Next Corner

by Kate Jordan

About this book

Kate Jordan's novel opens in Paris, where a telegram from Elsie's husband abruptly disturbs the freedom and excitement of her life abroad. His unexpected arrival forces her to look again at the marriage she is returning to and at the choices that have brought her to this moment.

Memories of an unsettled childhood as the daughter of a traveling concert singer help explain Elsie's longing for experience and affection. The narrative follows the friction between romantic expectation, loyalty and the consequences of acting on impulse. Social surroundings and private emotions remain closely linked as her circumstances change.

First published in 1921, the novel develops its drama through interior reflection as well as encounters and reversals. Its title suggests the uncertainty of what a new turn in life may reveal. The original frontispiece by Wilson V. Chambers is retained in the EPUB, alongside the complete narrative and the source edition's publication material.
