Frank Podmore surveys the evidence and disputes surrounding spiritualist mediumship at the beginning of the twentieth century. Beginning with Daniel Dunglas Home and Eusapia Palladino, he examines the circumstances of reported physical phenomena, the methods of investigators and the problems of interpreting a séance.
The second part turns to trance communications, including the mediumship of Mrs. Piper and Mrs. Thompson, the identities of supposed communicators and the cross-correspondences studied by psychical researchers. Podmore compares competing explanations and concludes with a discussion of what the collected cases might establish. The complete 1910 London volume includes both of its internal books and the original index.
