Edmond Hamilton frames this desert horror story around an exhausted stranger who stumbles into the camp of two travelers. The dying archaeologist warns them against entering the remote region where he claims to have found the lost city of Mamurth.
His account follows the search for an ancient place described in an inscription and the discovery of a temple whose structure seems to defy ordinary perception. Exploration becomes a struggle against an unseen presence. The stranger’s narrative turns the fascination of recovering the past into a fear of what a forgotten place may still contain.
The listeners must decide what to make of a story told under the effects of injury, thirst and terror. That uncertainty remains part of the closing frame. First published in Weird Tales in August 1926, the complete work preserves the original sequence of testimony, escape and reflection, together with its source illustrations and publishing credits.
