Sarah Turner and Jeannette Littlemore investigate the relationship between synaesthesia, metaphor and creativity. They ask what the unusual connections between sensations reported by synaesthetes can reveal about the ways people describe and evaluate their experiences.
The study compares responses from synaesthetes and people without synaesthesia, examining descriptions of sensory experiences as well as reactions to emotion words and emotive expressions. Its combination of qualitative interpretation and quantitative analysis follows the detail of the participants’ language while looking for broader patterns in their responses.
Examples of unexpected comparisons make the central questions concrete: why a particular experience prompts an inventive description, how emotion enters that description, and what embodied experience contributes to it. The book connects these findings with creativity in the wider population, offering an account of metaphor as a process shaped by perception and feeling.
