Abraham Vlerebome recounts the life and mediumship of James Riley, known as Farmer Riley, alongside his own experiences investigating psychic phenomena. The narrative follows sittings held at Riley's home and elsewhere in the United States, combining personal recollection with accounts supplied by other witnesses.
Chapters describe materialisation séances, voices, slate writing, music, and encounters attributed to familiar spirits. Vlerebome discusses the conditions under which sittings were conducted and the explanations that participants offered for what they experienced. Letters, reports, and individual episodes expand the account beyond a conventional biographical outline.
The book also considers Riley's family, character, and understanding of mediumship. Readers will find a substantial participant's narrative of American spiritualist practice, including the author's reflections on spiritual identity and life after death. This complete original edition retains its portraits, illustrations, and concluding chapter.
