E. H. Caylor uses a fictional narrative to examine spirit mediumship and the ways information can circulate around a séance. The story begins when an itinerant medium reads newspaper accounts of the disappearance and reported death of Dr. William Sedgwick, a retired veterinary surgeon whose private life has become a subject of local speculation.
The medium studies the published details as interest in spirit messages grows among his clients. Caylor follows the interaction between expectation, personal knowledge and apparent communications from the dead, presenting his objections to spiritualism through scenes and conversations rather than a conventional treatise.
A separate discussion of psychic force and mental law develops the explanatory ideas behind the story. The appended glossary defines terms used in discussions of hypnosis, telepathy, materialization and spiritualism. First published in 1900, the book combines a compact mystery-like narrative with a religiously framed critique of mediumistic practice, offering a contrasting voice within the literature of spiritualist controversy.
