The Gates of Pearl

by David Mason

About this book

Henry Gordon is adjusting to work aboard an orbital station when his long-dead aunt walks through a solid wall. What begins as one technician's alarming experience becomes a problem for the people responsible for keeping the station and its personnel functioning, especially when similar reports become difficult to dismiss.

David Mason combines the routines of a military space installation with an apparently supernatural intrusion. Technical tasks, transfer forms and medical interviews provide a deliberately practical setting for an event that seems to violate the assumptions on which the whole enterprise depends.

Originally published in Science Fiction Adventures in October 1957, the complete short story develops its mystery through exchanges among the station's personnel and the people investigating their reports. Its final turn returns the strange phenomenon to a personal relationship, joining the language of space exploration with a compact ghost story about recognition, uncertainty and the boundaries of ordinary experience.
