The Future of Food and Agriculture: Trends and Challenges

by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations

About this book

This FAO report examines fifteen global trends shaping food and agriculture and draws from them ten challenges for the coming decades. It connects changes in population, economic activity, technology, and natural resources with the prospects for food security and nutrition.

Individual sections consider urbanisation and ageing, investment and trade, competition for land and water, climate change, agricultural productivity, pests and diseases, and the effects of crises. Other chapters examine poverty, employment, migration, changing food systems, food losses, governance, and development finance. Charts and tables bring together the historical patterns and projections used in the analysis.

The final section explains how the trends interact and sets out the challenges they pose for agriculture and rural economies. An annex summarises relevant international frameworks, followed by extensive references. This is the complete 2017 report, including its original figures, tables, and publisher cover.
