Violet Jacob gathers thirteen stories about ambition, attachment, chance and the ways people imagine lives beyond their immediate circumstances. The long opening tale, The Fortune-Hunters, leads into shorter narratives whose settings and situations give the collection a varied social and emotional range.
The contents include Léonie, The Black Man’s Hand, Other People’s Gods, The Lights of Jerusalem and The Fringe of the Jungle. Nine pieces had appeared in magazines, while four were new to the volume. The complete 1910 collection retains Jacob’s note on those earlier appearances and every story in its original sequence.
