The Earthen Vessel: A Volume Dealing with Spirit-Communication Received in the Form of Book-Tests

by Pamela Glenconner; preface by Sir Oliver Lodge

About this book

Pamela Glenconner records a series of “book-tests” that she regards as evidence of communication with people who have died. In these tests, directions received during sittings point to passages in particular books, and the significance of the resulting words is considered in relation to people, memories, and circumstances.

The introduction explains the preservation of the sitting notes and the inclusion of unsuccessful as well as successful tests. Sir Oliver Lodge’s prefatory discussion considers why book-tests interested psychical researchers and how they differ from other reported communications. The main record groups and examines the individual tests, allowing readers to follow the instructions, the passages located, and Glenconner’s interpretation of their connections.

Published in New York by the John Lane Company in 1921, the complete volume includes four appendices and a conclusion. The original historical binding, printed pages, and supporting material are preserved.
