Helen R. Hull's story follows Winifred Page and her family through the hopes, separations and disappointments that connect one generation with another. An early move from an isolated Maine village to an inland city becomes a point of departure for examining what parents want for their children and what children can understand only through experiences of their own.
The narrative brings private grief into conversation with family memory. Choices that once seemed remote or difficult to forgive return in another form, as a younger woman's loss changes her understanding of the feelings and expectations surrounding her.
First published in two installments in Good Housekeeping in February and March 1943, the story is complete in this EPUB. It includes the original illustrations credited to Nicholas Riley and preserves the source text's ending and publication notes. Hull's emphasis remains on emotional recognition, the obligations felt within a family and the cost of learning sympathy through personal experience.
