The Burning Characteristics of 3 m to 6 m Dry Douglas-Fir Trees

by Erik Johnsson, Giovanni Di Cristina, Eric Mueller

About this book

Dry trees can expose their surroundings to intense heat during wildland–urban interface fires. This experimental report measures the burning of Douglas-fir trees between three and six meters tall to provide data for characterizing and modeling those outdoor fire hazards.

The authors document tree preparation and ignition, heat release, mass loss, carbon monoxide and soot production, and heat flux at different distances. Photogrammetry and video records describe the specimens and their burning behavior, while a rescaling method addresses the response time of the calorimeter. This complete May 2025 revision retains the original photographs, measurement plots, tables and appendices. The study was first issued in February 2025; this is its corrected revision.
