The Bracelet

by Talbert Josselyn

About this book

Talbert Josselyn sets this tale of menace at a dinner gathering where an old bracelet and the story attached to it disturb the guests. Jack Radbourne’s resentment toward his wife gives the evening’s conversation an additional and increasingly uneasy significance.

An account of the ornament’s earlier ownership describes power, suspicion and a deadly association with its use. As the guests listen and respond, the line between a remote story and an immediate possibility begins to narrow. The bracelet becomes the point at which private hostility and collective fear meet.

The closing events leave the company confronting a death whose circumstances do not fit the physical explanation they expect. The story combines a historical tale within a tale with the tensions of its modern social setting. First printed in Weird Tales in September 1926, it is presented complete, with the source illustrations, credits and licensing notices retained.
