G. B. H. Bishop presents stories intended to show aspects of Russian Christianity through fictional encounters and personal experiences. Most are set against the background of the Ukraine as the author knew and described it, with faith, doubt, pilgrimage and sacred images recurring through the collection.
The tales include The Ikon Not Made with Hands, The Pilgrim’s Ikon, The Living Ikon of Zharaima, Pax Dei, The Hermit, The Witch, The Seer and The Veiled Christ. Bishop’s introduction explains the collection's purpose for a general readership. This complete 1916 edition retains the original stories, illustrations and introductory account of their setting.
