Donald A. Carter recounts the American First Army’s offensive against the St. Mihiel salient in September 1918. The campaign marked a major step in the American Expeditionary Forces’ development into an independent army capable of coordinating infantry, artillery, tanks and aircraft on a large scale.
The narrative follows the planning, deployment and four days of fighting, placing American decisions alongside the German withdrawal and the wider Allied campaign. It considers the difficulties of moving forces and supplies, the limits of coordination and what the operation revealed about the army’s readiness for later battles. The complete 2018 historical study retains its original campaign maps, photographs, artwork and further reading. The cover painting is Harvey Dunn’s The Tanks at Seicheprey, credited to the Smithsonian Institution, National Museum of American History.
