Robert C. Kroll compiles discourses attributed to the spirits of Robert G. Ingersoll and Charles Haddon Spurgeon, followed by verse attributed to Jack Carpenter. The collection records the work of the Scientific Seance Circle in St. Louis and presents its communications as evidence concerning survival after death.
Kroll's preface describes the circle, its medium Otto E. Laroge, and the direct-voice procedure through which he says the discourses were received and written down. The first group addresses superstition, discouragement, human conduct, and religion. The second considers prayer and the relationship between mental activity and spiritual life.
The closing Post-Mortem Reveries uses a conversational poetic voice to discuss death, religious expectations, and the speaker's imagined experience beyond the grave. This complete Book One preserves the compiler's explanation, all three divisions, and the original printed cover.
