Spirit Life of Theodore Parker presents a narrative attributed to Parker after death and communicated through the mediumship of Elizabeth Ramsdell. The Boston edition introduces the circumstances of the writing before giving the account in a sequence of forty short chapters.
The opening chapters describe a spirit home and the occupations and responsibilities of spirit life. Subsequent sections develop the speaker’s views of spiritual growth, relations with earthly existence and the religious meaning of continued life. The narrative combines descriptions of the spiritual world with reflections on human conduct and divine purpose.
The preface explains how the communications were received and places them among contemporary writings attributed to departed authors. An appendix continues the religious reflections that accompany the account. This complete edition preserves the original prefatory material, chapter order and conclusion, together with the surviving printed wrapper bound into the archival copy.
