Somebody Outside

by Helen R. Hull

About this book

Helen R. Hull follows Thomas through the loss of his wife Jennie and the disorienting loneliness that follows. Their household routines, including the small troubles and pleasures of listening to the radio, establish the intimate habits on which his life has depended.

After Jennie’s death, relatives try to provide care and company, but Thomas struggles to make their arrangements feel like home. Ordinary objects and remembered conversations carry a significance that others cannot easily share. The radio becomes connected with his longing to hear the familiar voice that once answered him.

The story moves closely through Thomas’s perceptions, bringing memory, grief and physical surroundings together without an explanatory narrator standing apart from him. First published in Collier’s in August 1927, it is presented as a complete short work, with Courtney Allen’s illustrations and the source edition’s credits retained in the original EPUB.
