James J. Fox studies Rotenese origin narratives through ritual recitations collected in eastern Indonesia. He introduces the parallel language and complementary images through which poets describe the beginnings of cooking, crops, weaving and other elements of life.
The volume presents narratives from Termanu, Thie and other domains alongside translations and explanatory commentary. Background chapters place the recitations in their social and religious settings and explore their shared metaphoric patterns. This original 2024 research collection brings together the narratives and analysis as a complete work; the historical age of the oral traditions is distinguished from the publication of this book.
